The end of 'Do-Re-Mi': Maria and the children run through the hedge tunnel, hop around the Pegasus fountain, pat the dwarfs' heads and finish on the steps by the Rose Hill with the fortress behind them.

NOTEEvery tour group stops at the steps between 10 and 16. Before 9 you have them to yourself.

EXT. SCHLOSS LEOPOLDSKRON – SALZBURG

The lake terrace and the back of the villa: the children fall out of the boat, Maria and the Captain argue on the terrace. The gazebo stood in the palace park for the film and was moved afterwards.

NOTEBook a room if you want the terrace; otherwise the lake path gives the exact camera angle.

Maria arrives at the gate singing 'I Have Confidence'; the Captain drives up the avenue; the family sneaks out at night. The yellow façade and the tree-lined drive.

EXT. HELLBRUNN PALACE: THE GAZEBO – SALZBURG

as 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' and 'Something Good'

The glass gazebo where Liesl and Rolf dance and where Maria and the Captain declare themselves. Built for the film in the Leopoldskron park, given to the city in 1991 and re-erected in Hellbrunn's park. The dance interiors were shot on a larger studio copy.

NOTEThe trick fountains and the palace charge admission and are worth it, but they have nothing to do with the film.

EXT. NONNBERG ABBEY – SALZBURG

The abbey gate and courtyard where Maria leaves and the children come to ask for her. The real Maria was a novice here and married Georg von Trapp in its church in 1927. The interiors in the film were sets.

NOTEThe nuns sing the morning office at 6:45 and the public may attend.

Maria splashes the horse fountain on her way to the villa; later the Nazi flags hang from the Residenz in the same square. The cathedral is behind.

The family hides behind the graves' wrought-iron gates from the searching soldiers – filmed on a studio replica of the cemetery's arcades.

The family sings 'Edelweiss' and 'So Long, Farewell' in front of the arcades cut into the rock, then disappears during the announcement.

Maria walks up the aisle of the yellow baroque basilica of St Michael. The real wedding was at Nonnberg; the abbey church was too small to film in.

The alpine meadow with the Hohenwerfen fortress in the valley below is where Maria first teaches the children to sing.

NOTEThe Eisriesenwelt ice cave above Werfen is the other reason to make the trip.

EXT. FUSCHL AND ST. GILGEN – SALZKAMMERGUT

The helicopter shots that open the film pass over Fuschlsee, Wolfgangsee and the lakes district; the family's 'hike' over the mountains at the end is Obersalzberg – towards Germany, not away from it.
