COLD OPEN

The 2008 film was shot in the summer of 2007 on Skopelos and Skiathos in the Sporades and at Damouchari on the Pelion peninsula opposite, with the interiors at Pinewood. Kalokairi does not exist – it is a collage of the three. The 2018 sequel, Here We Go Again, moved the whole island to Vis in Croatia for tax and logistics reasons, so the two films have two sets of locations some 800 km apart.

The tiny white chapel on a 100-metre rock at the island's north-eastern tip is where Sophie's wedding takes place – the climb up the stairs, the view from the top. The interior was a set.

VISITING

Free; a car park below, then about 200 steps cut into the rock. 30 km from Skopelos town by the north road, about 45 minutes; there is no bus to the chapel, the nearest stop is Glossa, about 6 km away. The chapel itself is usually locked.

NOTELate afternoon: the light is on the rock and the day boats have gone. Wear proper shoes on the steps.

The tiny mainland harbour played Kalokairi's port: Donna leads the village women down to the jetty and they leap into the sea. The stone-built village of the older scenes is also here.

VISITING

Free; on the east coast of Pelion, about 50 km from Volos by a winding road, a small pebble beach and two tavernas. No ferry link to Skopelos – it is a separate trip.

NOTEDamouchari makes sense with a Pelion road trip, not with the islands.

The sequel's island: the harbour scenes are Komiža and Vis town (the port is the border-control scene), Barjoška bay near Komiža is the Hotel Bella Donna's setting, and Stiniva cove is the beach. The hotel itself was mostly a studio build with the bay as backdrop.

VISITING

Car ferry from Split in about 2 hours 20 minutes, catamaran faster; the island is small enough to drive round in a day. Nothing of the hotel remains on the island.

NOTEThe Vis day trips from Split combine the film spots with the Blue Cave on Biševo – a long day with a lot of boat.

Tips before you go

  1. Skopelos has no airport: fly to Skiathos, then the ferry (30–60 minutes) to Skopelos town or Glossa.
  2. The chapel is at the far end of the island from the main town – 45 minutes each way by car; the boat tours are the easy option.
  3. Rent a car or scooter for Glysteri and the chapel, which have no bus; Kastani has a stop about 300 m above the beach with a dozen runs a day in summer.
  4. Damouchari on Pelion is a separate trip from the islands; do it from Volos, not from Skopelos.
  5. The 2018 film is Croatia, not Greece: if it is the Bella Donna you want, that is Vis, from Split.
  6. September: the sea is warm, the boats still run, and the chapel steps are not a queue.
