Peaky Blinders is set in Small Heath, Birmingham, and was filmed almost anywhere but. The Small Heath of 1919 no longer exists, so between 2012 and 2021 the production built it from a Liverpool terrace, the docks and Georgian squares of the same city, a Cheshire country house and the canal yard of an open-air museum in Dudley. Only the 2026 film, The Immortal Man, was based in Birmingham itself, at Steven Knight's Digbeth Loc. Studios. Most of the places below are public streets, museums or listed buildings you can walk into; the exceptions are noted.

The boat dock and anchor forge are Charlie Strong's yard in every series and in the film: Danny Whizz-Bang's fake execution in episode one, the tea party with the Changrettas in series three. The canal towpath and the bridge on Canal Street are where Freddie and Ada meet in secret; St James's School is where Father Hughes dies.

VISITING

Open-air museum on Tipton Road, Dudley, about 15 km west of Birmingham, open 10am to 5pm, closed some winter days. Admission charged: an adult ticket was GBP 27.95 online and GBP 30.95 on the day in September 2026, and every ticket includes free returns for 12 months. Official Peaky Blinders filming-location tours of 75 to 90 minutes run on selected dates with a costumed guide; pre-booking is essential. Peaky Blinders Nights are separate evening events.

NOTEGo on an ordinary day and walk the canal side yourself; the yard is a working exhibit, not a roped-off set. The guided tour adds stories, not access.

The opening of episode one, Tommy on the black horse in the smoke, was shot here in 2012. Powis Street and the surrounding Welsh Streets, derelict at the time, played Watery Lane through the early series: Campbell's raid on Small Heath, Polly's march with the Shelby wives in series three.

VISITING

A residential street. The Welsh Streets were refurbished from 2017 and are family homes again; the houses are the same size and shape, the soot and the cobbles are gone. Walk through from Princes Park, photograph the street, not the windows. About 2.5 km south-east of the city centre; bus or a 30-minute walk.

NOTEGo early in the morning before the cars are parked and the light is low; that is the closest the street still comes to the opening shot.

The walkways around the dock doubled as the street outside the Garrison in series one, and the series-one finale, the Shelbys against Billy Kimber's men, was fought outside the Tobacco Warehouse. The 1901 warehouse is the largest brick warehouse in the world.

VISITING

The North Warehouse is the Titanic Hotel, whose bar and restaurant take non-residents; the Tobacco Warehouse opposite has been converted to flats, so you see the facade and the dock from Regent Road and the quay. Free to walk, 2.5 km north of the Pier Head along the dock road.

NOTECombine with the Anfield or Everton stadium walk along Regent Road; the docks are a long, windy stretch on their own.

Grace dies on the stairs here in series three. The cells and passages under the hall are where the Shelbys wait to hang at the start of series four; the Great Hall is the fascist rally and the failed shot at Mosley in series five. The exterior appears for a moment in the film as Birmingham during the Blitz.

VISITING

Opposite Lime Street station. The Heritage Centre and parts of the hall are free to enter, generally Tuesday to Saturday from 10am; the Great Hall closes for events. Guided tours of the courts and cells are charged and bookable through the Liverpool City Halls site. Check before you go: the building is a working venue.

NOTEThe cells tour is the one that pays off for the show; the Great Hall you may or may not get to see on the day.

Liverpool's Georgian Quarter stands in for London whenever the Shelbys go south. The car bomb of series two, episode five, went off in Falkner Square; Rodney Street, a long terrace of 18th-century brick houses, is London in series two.

Public streets and a public garden square between the two cathedrals, ten minutes on foot from the city centre. Nothing to book; the houses are private.

Tommy's confessions and Polly's prayers were filmed in the Anglican cathedral, the largest in Britain. In series six Tommy meets the Boston gangster Jack Nelson in one of its side spaces.

VISITING

Open daily 10am to 6pm, free to enter; the tower is ticketed. Last entry 15 minutes before closing. On the edge of the Georgian Quarter, five minutes from Falkner Square.

The house Tommy gives Polly for her birthday in series two, episode two, is in the model village that Lever Brothers built for its soap workers from 1888.

VISITING

The village is free to walk around; the house is privately lived in, so photograph from the pavement. Port Sunlight Museum on King George's Drive is open daily 10am to 4.30pm, adult ticket GBP 8 in September 2026. Merseyrail from Liverpool Central to Port Sunlight, about 15 minutes, then a short walk.

The series-four finale, Tommy and Alfie face to face on the beach at Margate, was shot in the dunes at Formby, 25 km north of Liverpool.

VISITING

National Trust dunes and beach, open all day. The Victoria Road car park is pay-and-display, free for members, and fills on sunny weekends; Merseyrail to Freshfield and a 20-minute walk through the pinewoods is the easier way. Wind and no shelter; dress for it.

NOTELow tide and a grey sky give you the shot from the episode; that is most days.

Tommy's country house from series three to six, inside and out: the library is his office, the gallery hosts the wedding breakfast, the drive is in almost every episode. In the series-six finale he blows it up.

VISITING

Private family home of Viscount Ashbrook, open to visitors. The gardens open daily 10am to 5pm; the hall itself opens only on selected days each month, listed on the estate's What's On page, and the Peaky Blinders rooms have been shown in special exhibitions. Admission charged; daily tickets start from GBP 6 on the estate's ticket page, hall entry on hall-open days only. Under 30 minutes by car from central Manchester, about 45 minutes from Liverpool; there is no useful public transport.

NOTECheck the hall-open dates before you drive. On garden-only days you see the outside and the drive, which is still most of the show.

The Immortal Man was the first time the story was shot in the city it is set in: narrowboats were loaded at Gas Street Basin, Tommy rides through a bombed Cornwall Street, and the interiors including the Garrison were built at Digbeth Loc. Studios, filming from 30 September to 13 December 2024.

VISITING

Gas Street Basin is a public canal junction in the city centre, free, five minutes from New Street station, with pubs and boat trips. Digbeth Loc. Studios is a working studio with no public access; the Digbeth streets around it are the ones the Peaky Blinders walking tours use.

NOTEThe real Small Heath and Garrison Lane are 3 km east; there is little of 1919 left, and the walking tours do the real gang history better than a self-guided wander.

The city-centre walking tour starts at the Town Hall on Water Street, mostly Saturdays at 10am from March to November, and covers St George's Hall, the Georgian Quarter and the cathedral in around four hours. The taxi tour with a private guide is the one with the reviews: it adds Powis Street, Stanley Dock and, on the longer versions, Port Sunlight and Formby, which you cannot reach on foot. Take the taxi if you have half a day and want the outer locations; take the walk if you are already in town.

LOCATION MANAGER'S NOTES

Tips before you go

Base yourself in Liverpool. Seven of the ten locations are in or beside the city, and the tours start there; Dudley and Arley Hall are day trips by car or train.
The Black Country Living Museum is the only place where you stand in an actual set that is still dressed as it was: the yard, the forge, the boat dock. Give it a full day.
Powis Street is somebody's home now. The tours stop for a look and move on; do the same.
The Garrison you can drink in does not exist. The exterior was a built frontage, in series six and the film under the railway arches at Castlefield in Manchester, and the interior a studio set. The Peaky Blinders bars in Birmingham and Manchester are themed pubs, not locations.
The train scenes were shot on the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway in Yorkshire, starting with Keighley station in November 2012; a steam-hauled day rover is a reasonable detour from Leeds or Bradford.
The Immortal Man moved production to Birmingham but the locations are scattered from Calke Abbey in Derbyshire to the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct in Wales; the Birmingham walking tours cover the Digbeth end of it.

The series never shot a scene in Small Heath. Liverpool, the Black Country Living Museum in Dudley, Yorkshire and Manchester stood in for Birmingham; the city first played itself in the 2026 film.

~~You can drink in the Garrison~~Actually

There is no pub. The exterior was the Stanley Dock walkways in series one and later a purpose-built frontage in Castlefield, Manchester; the bar inside was a studio set in Huddersfield, Manchester and finally Digbeth.

~~Watery Lane still looks like the show~~Actually

Powis Street was derelict when the production found it in 2012. It has been refurbished since 2017 and is a lived-in street with painted doors and parked cars.

The Shelby mansion is Arley Hall near Northwich in Cheshire, a family home that opens to the public on selected days.
